Leave it to 'ol Uncle Sam.
The Spanish-American War cost the USA $4 Million. During that time, the governement placed a tax on long distance phone calls to pay for war. Exactly how many phones were available at that time--like, six?
The government never lifted that tax. So yes, every time you make a long distance call, you are being taxed to pay for a war long forgotten.
And aren't we still fighting this war? Ha ha! (oh, lighten up you cracker, I have MANY Mexican friends who would find that hilarious)
The government only recently lifted the tax since they felt they were making too much money at a whopping $12 Billion PER YEAR!!! Each and every year. Where the crap was all that money going, anyway?
Ok, so the tax is lifted, so now what? At tax time, you may make a deduction for a refund of...Are you ready for this?
$54 dollars.
Wow. I could go buy a video game with that. Or three and a half DVDs.
Whoo-Hoo! We're rolling in dough!!
But wait a sec. We never make long distance calls. Are we eligible?!
You know, I've always said that I wouldn't mind paying taxes if I knew the money was being used effectively, efficiantly.
But let's be serious here. We all know it's not being used for the greater good other than fattening up the wallets for the fat cats in Washington.
