A while ago, I read in the local newspaper that schools were looking to lengthen the school year even more so, so that they (the teachers and students) can have more days off throughout the year. It was explained by one teacher that the extra days off (President's day, Lincoln's birthday, etc) help alleviate stress and what not.
...As though 3 months in the summer, 1 week for Thanksgiving, 2-3 weeks at Christmas, and every single Let's Close the Government Offices and Banks Day for the Heck of it Day weren't enough. As for the rest of us, we don't get hardly as much time off. Not every single business out there closes because on this day, many years ago, some dude accidentally found the Americas. Speaking for myself, it sure would nice to get a combined total of, what is now, 5 months off a year.
The rest of us, the non post office workers, the bank customers, and parents with full time jobs who have no where to stick their kids just because it's Monday--we continue to work on an hourly wage while getting a minimum of holidays. Some of us are lucky to get paid for taking a day off. Some us are not. This year, my fellow employees and myself didn't even get a day off for Christmas or New Year's because these 2 days fell on the weekend. Gee whiz. I hate to see Christmas fall on a Monday at a new job. Will we get the day off for celebrating the birth of Christ?
Alright, I have issues. But you see my point? This year I will finally take my long awaited vacation. My husband and I never go anywhere, but it's nice not to have to go to work for a full week. By the time I get to take my actual vacation, I will have gone a full 2 years without one. Funny, I had scheduled my vacation at my last job a week before I left. Bummer.
At this new job, I will not get 40 hours vacation pay. I get $100. WHEEEE! I may just go do some shopping! If I can find a store where the items are free...
Ok, I realize I may be blessed and fortunate--after all some people don't ever get to take vacations. And I must fully admit to being entirely jealous of my husband's one month a year in paid vacation time (plus 5 paid holidays).
And, while I admit that teachers are doing the job that no one else wants I will close by saying this:
Quit yer darn whining about not having enough days off and alleviating stress! My co-workers can smell the stress coming out of me. They smell the burn-out rising up as summer approaches!
With that said, I think I'll take my vacation during wedding season. Look, if you're gonna wear white and expect me to clean it, don't go tromping through the mud on the way to the church.
