I'm so sick of yard work. Thursday I worked for 2 hours and we had our nephew, Dustin help us yesterday. I told Shawn that next weekend I'm vegetating. Fully.
Poor Dustin. He's 11 years old and a bit of an oddball. Kids at school tease him and call him "retard" and "gay".
Shawn's been making an efford to get closer to Dustin, to befriend him. Dustin's been wanting to do small jobs so we enlisted his help for $5 and a used video game.
Poor Dustin. He's a bit of a book worm and SUPER smart. This kid says things you wouldn't expect to come out of adult's mouths. He uses huge words you wouldn't think of an 11 yeard old saying.
But, oh poor, poor Dustin has never worked in his life! The three of us worked for 2 solid hours, hard. He kept grunting and complaining of his back, always asking to take breaks.
We were patient and kept telling him there's always a reward for hard work. I was really proud of the kid, though. He volunteered to take giant leaf bags to the curb without being told. He didn't whine constantly about the heat. He was very grown up about it, though still a kid.
See, Shawn and I are used to extreme heat and sweat rolling down our backs all day. I afraid we might not take that into considersation with an 11 yeard old boy who rarely has any chores at home. So, I'm proud of us too. We were kind and kept him hydrated. Most of all, we were patient!
I told Shawn, that if we had kids, they'd be better than any of our brothers' and sisters'. (ha ha! I'm not that nasty; I was joking!) They would say "Yes sir," and "No ma'am". They would say "Please," and "Thank you." They would know the meaning of hard work from the time they could walk. They would know the value of a dollar from the time they could count and work for every penny.
I'd beat their behinds every ten minuets to make sure of it!
In retrospect, I thought of Dustin and told this to Shawn: "He's gonna be white collar. But, you know, I bet that kid's gonna go to college and make more money than all of us put together..."
Who's smarter now?
