I Love Lucy

No one called on the ad I placed, so I named the new dog Lucy. I took her to the vet yesterday. I asked how much it was cost for shots and a check up and when they told me, I almost started crying.

They gave me a small discount in the end. The welling up of my eyes was quite real! I can't fake that. When the vet took a blood sample I actually did cry. He inserted the needle in a bald patch of skin and I could see the needle go into her skin, lying under her skin. Normally, I'm pretty tough. It's actually easier for me to watch a needle going into me. But between that and thinking about the cost, I just started to cry.

The vet laughed. "I'm sorry! I couldn't have kids watching them get stuck all the time," I laughed.

The heartworm test was negative and the vet said the dog was about 3 or 4 years old. I thought she was a puppy because she's so misproportioned with her huge ears.

I named her lucy and got her a collar and name tag with our phone number.

Total vet bills: $87.50
Collar and tag: $9.00
Pee pee training pads: $7.00
Fattening up a mistreated animal: Priceless

Lucy only weighs 4 pounds but she's got some bite in her. When Shawn's oldest brother popped in for a visit she was really cool to him. We had one of our nephews over yesterday and Lucy was ready to tear him a new one. We had to keep her in the laundry room until we took him home. She never actually bit him, but she tried. She was read to eat the hem of his pants, I think.

Maybe she was abused by children? Maybe she got dumped?

Anyhow, she's here to stay. I only have one more place in the yard that has to be puppy-proofed. I don't think Lucy's particularly smart enough to figure out the doggie door on her own, but she has been imitating our other dog, Prissy. I'm afraid she might just imitate her right out the door and find that tiny space in the gate.

For now, I'm anxious to see if the hair on her belly and legs will grow back; it's aready coming in on her head. She sorta looks like a plucked chicken when she lays certain ways. She's got a face only a mother could love.

I guess that's me.
