A while back I asked a friend, Gina, if Hispanic meant from Spain, or was it a generalization of anyone who speaks a form of Spanish. (I thought the second was true) She said, "I think it means you're from Spain. That's why I hate it. I being being called Hispanic. I was born in Mexico--I'm Mexican, I'm not from Hiss-Spain!" (Hiss-Spain, that's what she said, it's not a typo. It was a joke)
Good point. Though, I did see a comedian of, ah, er, Hispanic heritage who complained that white people are white wherever they go. He said, "If I go to Texas, I'm Mexican. If I go to Florida, I'm Cuban..." and so and so forth.
Also good point. But how is anyone supposed to know? I've met several black people who refer to themselves as "African-American". You might think this refers to someone who was born in Africa and moved to the states. No, my friend, you are quite wrong! This refers to someone who was born in the states, his parents also, his grandparents, also, etc. (To be fair, I've also met black people who hate this and say, "I'm American, darn it! I've never even been to Africa!!")
So why the reference to Africa? If that were the case, I will balk at anyone who refers to me as being "white". Actually, my skin is a a sort of olive color, if you want to be specific. Ha ha.
I am: French-Czech-Irish-American. And I'll have you refer to me in no other way!!
See, if we all did it, if we could all get away with it... It would become down right ridiculous.
My husband is of Polish decent, I believe. He was born on an army base in Germany and brought to the US when he was just a couple months old. He has a duel citizenship. Would you say he was German-American?
Of course not!! If you saw him, you'd say he was the whitest-white boy you ever saw! He wears rock & roll T-shirts, has long hair and watches NASCAR like a fanatic. He's addicted to Fox News and the TV show Survivor. He grew up on Scooby Doo and He-Man.
So what's Politically Correct? What do we call my husband? Depending on how racist you are, you might call him Cracker, but really, he doesn't care either way.
Just call him American.
Period.
