Tue Aug 28 Pt 2

The head surgery nurse told me that surgery should only last 30 minuets and I was welcome to hang out in the room. I had to check on the parents. Had to make sure there wasn't blood on the lobby floor.

Dad needed to stretch so he walked me to my car as I told him about the wicked needles and pumped my own body with some nicotine. The parents had been getting along. They at least tolerated each other and actually chatted a bit. I even spoke to my mother-in-law, all my bitterness magically gone as Shawn was in my thoughts.

I worried because of his heart thing. Thirty-five minuets, I returned to Shawn's room stinking of cigarettes. We had prayed earlier, for guidance to the doctors and nurses, to ease Shawn's pain, that our parents didn't put each other in the emergency room.

Shawn was sitting up in his bed, holding a cup of some liquid. He made me promise when we got out of surgery that I had a big Pepsi waiting for him. He hadn't had anything to drink since 9pm the night before.

"I told them I wanted Pepsi," he said. "They brought me this....crap." I tasted it. Sprite. I later learned that Shawn argued with a nurse about Sprite or water. In his drugged stupor, he fought with her for a Pepsi! (he later apologized to the poor woman after he was coherent)

I grabbed a Pepsi at the snack station and poured it into Shawn's cup. "How are things outside?" he asked.
"Beautiful," I said. "Everyone's getting along beautifully."
"You're a bad liar," Shawn mumbled.
I am, but I wasn't lying!

It took two of us to get Shawn into my car. We got his pain meds, some McDonald's and went home. I got him into bed, his leg wrapped from toe to thigh, and got some food in him. He didn't sleep at all. I ran out to get Season One of Heroes and drove like a drunk the whole way from being so sleep deprived. But at least we got to watch the unbreakable cheerleader till bedtime.
