I support immigration. Without it, America would not be what it is today. Without it, I'd have been born in Russia, probably. And I hate the cold.
Which brings me to the new immigration bill. Congress would like to take the estimated 20 million illegal immigrants and provide them with amnesty, In other words, they do not have to take any required tests, obtain a work visa, green card, or fear deportation. Show up at this appointed time and date and boom! You are a citizen.
Like what President Reagen did in the eighties.
I thought I had no problem with that because it would take all the illegal aliens, make them legal, therefore, making them pay taxes like the rest of us working stiffs.
By the way...People migrate to USA for the work and job oppurtunities. Where are the jobs? All of our large corporations outsource EVERYTHING overseas! So what jobs are left?
As I understand it, it will cost us $3 Trillion--that's trillion to pay for medicare and social security if the 20 million illegals are made legal.
So I thought, well, aren't these 20 million people going to be paying taxes now that they have social security numbers? Wouldn't they be paying into the systems? Seems to make sense, however you must also first remember that our social security system is broke. And Medicare is a sham. AND to top it all off, we now have ANOTHER 20 million who will probably pay into social security and not get a dime after retirement. And we wonder why the elderly cannot afford their medications...
So why even have immigrants fill out forms and take tests and the history exam from hell? Why not just land on the shore and be handed a social security number, along with some free food stamps?
Isn't that the way Washington imagined it as he crossed the Deleware?
July 7, 2007 Update: The amnesty bill was voted down. But it will probably resurface again after the nest presidential election. Sigh. I'm gonna miss all my favorote TV shows when they take them over for debates. Just read a newspaper and leave Survivor in its own time slot!
