Eariler this year I was with my 9 year old twin nieces and happened to refer to African-Americans as "black".
"GASP!!!" they said.
"What?"
"You're not supposed to say that!" they said.
"Well, what I am supposed to say?"
"You're supposed to say African-American!" they exclaimed.
Now this has been up for debate for quite some time. Some of my friends say, "Don't call me 'African-American.' I am American!" Some prefer the term.
So I asked the twins, "Well, what should call you? White, or American?"
"Well, what are we?" they asked.
"Irish, French, Chzech; a well rounded mix od Euporean Heinz 57," I replied.
"You can call us white," they said.
"So how is that different from calling an African American 'black'?"
Apparently they hadn't thought this through. It's perfectly ok by the twins to be referred to as white, according to them, however you may not use terms of color when describing any other race, other than someone who has pink skin.
Of course, they also think it is rude and mean to refer to someone as being "rich" because they think money is a bad thing and corrupts people. While this is sometimes true, I wouldn't take offense if anyone referred to me as rich!
Well, off I go to purchase another lottery ticket in hopes of all my wildest dreams coming true (which is basically a trip to Disneyland)! In case I win, please don't be rude if you see me walking down the street.
